SCIL
SCIL is a democratic membership organisation run and controlled
by disabled people. We are committed to campaign for the full civil
rights of disabled people whilst supporting disabled people to make use
of current provisions available to enable them to live independently.
As well as
campaigning for full civil rights for disabled people, we also provide
the following user-led services, all based on the twelve
basic needs identified by disabled people.
|
|
| Promoting, advising
and assisting disabled people in all aspects of the local Direct Payments
Schemes. These schemes enable disabled people to exercise choice
and control over their own personal assistance requirements.
|
|
|
| Provides access to
a register of personal assistants who are looking for work.
The service also offers support and advice to anyone who is employing
or seeking to employ their own personal assistants.
|
|
|
| Providing training
and consultancy services, working to promote equality for disabled
people, based on the social model of disability.
|
|
|
| Training and supporting
disabled people to carry out audits of community care services.
We believe that the best judges of quality are service users.
|
|
|
| Empowering disabled
and disadvantaged people to exercise choice and control in their own
lives.
|
|
|
|
Offers support and representation
to disabled people who decide that they need it.

The South East Disability Equality Council (SEDEC) is an initiative
of Hampshire Coalition of Disabled People (HCODP) and Southampton
Centre for Independent Living (SCIL) in response to two factors:
The decline of the Disability Movement in Britain;
and
The demands of the new Disability Equality Duty on public bodies.
The Council is made up of Disabled People with a proven knowledge
of Disability Equality and a clear grasp of the Social Model of
Disability, who can represent the interests of Disabled People in
the South East, regardless of the nature of their impairment.

The aim of this website is to inform
visitors about SCIL its aims and what we can do to enable disabled people
to exercise choice and control over their lives. We want to develop
this site into a valuable resource for disabled people to be able to live
independently and to facilitate a method to enable every ones voice to
be heard. We want to use this website to explore new ways of making
information accessible to disabled people, so watch this space for developments!
Our Aims:
- To provide the means by which disabled people may take control
over their own lives, achieve full participation in all spheres
of society, and make changes to how they are viewed and treated.
|
- To provide encouragement, assistance, advice, support and facilitation
to individuals or groups wishing to live independently.
|
- To raise the expectations of disabled people, individually and
collectively, and ensure that their voices are heard.
|
- Everybody has the right to lead an independent life.
Our aim is to support people in achieving this. To be independent
does not mean doing everything for yourself. Independence
means having control over your life and having a say over
what happens to you.
|
Organisation Profile:
SCIL has been working in Southampton and across the south since 1984
when the local disabled people decided that an organisation of disabled
people was needed to promote independent
living and support those who sought a lifestyle which enabled them
to attain or restore choice and control over their lives. Disabled
people have identified twelve basic needs
to enable them to fully participate in society, SCIL is committed to securing
these rights.
