SCIL Business and Community Awards 2006
The Search Begins for Businesses Committed to Disability Equality Today (1 August 2006), Southampton Centre for Independent Living (SCIL) launched their search to find businesses that are committed to including disabled people both as customers and as employees. The 3rd SCIL Disabled People's Business and Community Awards will take place on the 16th November 2006 at the Rose Bowl Cricket Ground in West End Southampton, and for the first time this year, businesses across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are being asked to nominate themselves and to demonstrate the achievements they have made in promoting inclusion. There are categories covering a wide range of businesses from financial services to leisure facilities. Nominations from public sector bodies are also encouraged, in light of the new Disability Equality Duty which comes into effect in December. It is hoped that organisations will want to share their best practice in how they have ensured disabled people receive equal treatment as both customers and employees. The awards ceremony will be hosted by Debbie Thrower, and guests will be treated to comedy and magic throughout the event. Debbie Thrower commented "I am delighted to be hosting the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Disability Awards again this year. The event is a wonderful way to acknowledge the work businesses are doing to meet the needs of disabled employees and customers". Major sponsorship has been secured for the event from HSBC, SEEDA, Hampshire County Council,Southampton City Council, B&Q, The European Social Fund and South West Trains. Nomination packs are being sent out to over 2000 organisations across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, however organisations who do not receive a pack are strongly encouraged to download it here.
