Disability Equality Training (DET)

Why do we need Disability Equality Training ?

For many years trainers have been delivering Disability Awareness courses very often from an individual perspective as a way of demonstrating the different needs of people with a particular impairment. Heightening awareness usually takes the form of trying to change people's attitude towards disabled people. Whilst we would agree that this is an important change to make we also now recognise that it is not enough, there has to be action.  Setting disability in an equal opportunities context gives us a way forward whilst making the parallels with other marginalised groups within society such as gay, lesbian and ethnic minority groups.

For disabled people to be able to participate equally in their community we have to change more than attitudes, we have to change the environment in which we live and the systems within which we work. This can only be achieved by understanding the issues which effect our lives, addressing the barriers that exist, and changing policies and practices which exclude us.

Disability Equality Training courses are designed and delivered by qualified disabled trainers to equip participants with a working knowledge of disability issues and the ability to recognise discriminatory practice. Our courses also provide an insight into the untapped potential of disabled people.

Course details are available on request.
