Membership and management structure
As an organisation of disabled people, control rests with disabled people.
This is achieved by a two-tier membership structure in which only disabled
people can become full voting members. Non-disabled allies are welcome
to join as associate members and lend their support if the are in agreement
with our stated aims.
An elected Management Committee of full members manage and oversee
the day to day affairs of the organisation on behalf of the membership.
Staff and volunteers, working on different projects and priorities, set
by the
management committee, are fully accountable to them through the coordinator
who line-manages staff and volunteers.
Membership of SCIL is open to anyone aged 14 years or over who lives
or
works (paid or unpaid) within the geographical boundary of the county
of Hampshire.

Our aims are:
- to support individuals or groups of disabled people wishing to live
independently;
- to ensure that the views of disabled people are taken notice of;
- to change the attitude of others towards disabled people;
- to demand that the way disabled people live their lives is determined
by
themselves and not by professional bodies or institutions of any kind;
- to remove all constraints and barriers imposed on disabled people
by
society as regards education, access, transport, employment and
leisure activities.
Conditions of membership:
To join SCIL you must be aged 14 or over and live or work (paid or unpaid)
in the geographical county of Hampshire. You must also agree with the
'objects' of the Association as set out in the Memorandum of Association,
paragraph 3(1).
These being:
a) to provide means by which disabled people may take control over their
own lives, achieve full participation in all spheres of society, and effect
changes in how they are viewed and treated.
b) to provide encouragement, assistance, advice, support and facilities
to
individuals or groups wishing to live independently, by means of exercising
choice and exerting control over their own life and lifestyle, and to
raise the
expectations of disabled people, individually and collectively, and ensure
that their voice be heard.
To be a full member you must be a disabled person (whatever your impairment
- sensory, mobility, learning or 'hidden').
Non-disabled people may join as associate members and can participate
fully
in our activities but they are not entitled to vote. This is to ensure
that SCIL
remains in the control of its disabled members.
Members are required to pay a membership fee, which at present stands
at
£5 for waged applicants and £2.50 unwaged applicants.
Members are required by law to agree to pay up to £1 in the event
of SCIL being
wound up.
Members are entitled to receive notice of and attend any meetings called
by SCIL
and will from time to time receive these and other mailings. We try to
circulate
anything that might be of general interest or benefit.
Members are welcome to contact the Management Committee or visit the
office
at any time. If you experience any problems we will try to help. If you
want to assist
in the day to day running we are glad of any extra help.
Membership is renewable annually on April 1st.
Groups or professionals who wish to be involved in their professional
capacity can
be placed on our mailing list and attend our events but cannot become
members.
*** Postscript ***
In order to get the best out of the organisation and make it our own we
all need to
contribute what we are able to its development.
The Management Committee looks forward to working with you to this end
if you
decide to join us.
